Tamaso Maa Jyotirgamaya by Rahul Marar

Tamaso Maa Jyotirgamaya
(Lead me from Darkness to light)

Tamaso Maa Jyotirgamaya, three words but a treasure full of wisdom. The feel, realizing of moving closer to one’s own self conveyed by these three words is indefinable yet attainable. If you understand this then you will also understand that Tamaso Maa Jyotirgamaya is a journey from Darkness to Light, from Ignorance to Knowledge and from Untruth to Truth.

But what does this exactly mean? What is light?  Yes, there are these Roti, Kapda aur Makan, the so called basic needs of a man. Then in the next step there are some like success, glory, fame; etc. Even if the man gets all of these things, he goes on wanting for some more in abundance and thus starts this endless saga. So light here is not entirely an emission. Light here means finding a way to rise. Rise from all those negatives to positives. Rise from wanting all those useless immaterial things to relevant things, rise to find your true self. Ignorance obscures real understanding and for that you need light i.e. true knowledge. Staggering Ignorance radically impedes our ability to choose rightly and that is why we need to move to its opposite-knowledge and with this we should also understand the way to move from despair to hope and yes this will help you not to lose the reason for living. Like Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”

There are times when others think about you as no one, you too feel that you don’t even exist in this world. These thinking are bound to come to our mind and we cannot stop thinking that but we can indeed arrest the very growth of that thinking. As Cassandra Clare has said, “Whatever you are physically...male or female, strong or weak, ill or healthy--all those things matter less than what your heart contains. If you have the soul of a warrior, you are a warrior. All those other things, they are the glass that contains the lamp, but you are the light inside.” Because there may come much darkness in our life but somewhere there are some lights and we should understand that it is our life and we’re the only light that will drive all those darkness away.

Though losing oneself, hurting oneself can occur very quietly in the world, but if we understood the real meaning of Tamaso Maa Jyotirgamaya then it will make a loud thud within our conscience, and we will scream and get hurt about losing our oneself and like every time, we will surely get up and walk towards light, towards truth, towards knowledge and thereby we can heal our oneself, thereby we can rise-AGAIN. It is not very easy to follow this, not at all but if we want to conquer the world, the world that is I, Me and Myself then we have to do this. Someone said, “We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.”  So every time you come across roads filled with darkness and despair, then before embarking further just remember this line and then you will see a new road filled with light.Tamaso Maa Jyotirgamaya’

  1. Elegantly explains the essence of the great sanskrit verse. I liked it when the author refers to the men who are afraid of light. May be Maslow's hierarchic pyramid must have got evolved from this.
